Notes: Sanskrit equivalent: pāramitā, Pali: pāramī, Japanese: haramitsu, Tibetan: pha rol tu phy in pa. A pāramitā is the perfection or culmination of certain virtues. In the Mahāyāna tradition a pāramitā is a virtue practiced by a bodhisattva on the path to enlightenment. Another explanation is reaching the other shore The word is derived from the Sanskrit parama 'highest' or 'supreme'. The most common enumeration in the Mahāyāna tradition is 六度 'six pāramitās' and the most common in the Theravāda tradition is the ten pāramīs. The Mahāyāna tradition also extends the six pāramitās to ten 十波羅蜜, although they are different from the Theravāda list (BL 'pāramitā', p. 624; Shambhala 'pāramitā'; FGDB '度'; SH '波羅蜜多', p. 267).
